LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The conference is being held on the traditional territory of the Mi’Kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people, who are acknowledged as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.
The “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq Welastekwiyik (Maliseet) and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725.
The treaties did not surrender lands and resources but recognized Mi’kmaq title and established the rules for an ongoing relationship between nations.
